Mayumi
Raheem
Mayumi Raheem is one of Sri
Lanka’s most promising and accomplished athletes. Born on September
15th,1991, Mayumi first took to the water when she was only three and a
half years old. At five, Mayumi began squad training, entering the world
of competitive swimming a year later. A majority of her early training
was undertaken by coach Sumith Dharmadasa until 2000, when Mayumi left
Sri Lanka for Singapore. Mayumi continued to improve her performance
under the guidance of coach David Lim at Swimfast Aquatic. In 2002, she
trained under coach Damien Pedreschi at the Parnell Swimming Club in
Auckland, New Zealand before returning to Singapore and her training
with coach Lim and coach Jaan Murphy of the Singapore Swimming Club.
Presently, Mayumi continues to fine-tune her swimming at the Singapore
High Performance Center with renowned coach Jack Simon and improve her
performance working along with coaches Peter Rouse and Alicia Fong at
Optimum Performance (a well known strength and conditioning company in
Singapore).
No stranger to victory,
Mayumi has secured the Senior National Champion Award in Sri Lanka for
three years. She has consistently set Sri Lankan national records in a
number of swimming events, and at fourteen, was the youngest swimmer to
be appointed as Captain when she led the swimming contingent to the 2006
Asian Games in Doha. Also in 2006, Mayumi had the distinction of winning
Sri Lanka’s first gold medal at the 10th South Asian Games in Colombo;
she was also the highest medal winner – in any sport – at the games,
earning three gold, five silver and three bronze medals. With
sponsorships from Speedo International and Optimum Performance, Mayumi
is certainly flying high. Not content with swimming alone, Mayumi is
also a brown belt karateka and has represented her school in both
netball and touch rugby.
